Buying signal

A power project just started construction nearby. Here’s why that’s a reason to call.

The EIA lists every power project of 1 MW or more that is planned, under construction or newly online. How electrical, equipment and service reps use it.

What the record is

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s monthly generator inventory (EIA-860M) lists every power project of 1 megawatt or more with its developer, county, technology, size, status and planned online date.

Why it usually means buying

Projects under construction are buying now: switchgear, transformers, wire, fencing, equipment rental, site services, temporary facilities and labor. Developers and their EPC contractors buy from vendors near the site.

Who should call

  • Electrical distribution
  • Equipment rental
  • Fencing and site work
  • Safety and PPE
  • Portable facilities
  • Staffing and lodging

How to open the call

I saw the [project] solar project in [county] is under construction. We supply [what you sell] for projects like this. Who is the EPC contractor buying for the site?

What to check before you call

  • The developer is often not the buyer; ask for the EPC or general contractor.
  • Planned online dates tell you how much buying is left.
  • Projects that are “approved, not started” are worth a watch, not a call yet.
