Buying signal

A company just registered a truck fleet. Here’s why that’s a reason to call.

When a business registers a new motor-carrier fleet with FMCSA, it is about to buy fuel, tires, insurance, uniforms, safety gear and maintenance. How to use it.

What the record is

Every company that runs commercial trucks across state lines (and many that stay in-state) must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and get a USDOT number. The registration is public and lists the date, the address, the number of power units and drivers, and often a company officer.

Why it usually means buying

A new registration means a new operation: trucks that need fuel, tires, maintenance, insurance, drivers, uniforms, safety equipment and somewhere to park them. Most of those vendor decisions are made in the first few months, before habits set in.

Who should call

  • Fuel and fleet cards
  • Tires and truck service
  • Commercial insurance
  • Uniforms and PPE
  • Telematics and dash cams
  • Driver staffing and training
  • Shop supplies and lubricants

How to open the call

I saw you registered a new fleet with FMCSA in [month]. Most operations your size are still picking vendors for [what you sell] in the first few months. Who’s handling that for you?

What to check before you call

  • Registrations with 1–2 trucks are usually owner-operators; 3+ is a real fleet.
  • Check whether it is a private fleet (hauls its own goods) or for-hire; private fleets often buy more locally.
  • The officer named on the registration is often the owner and the decision maker.

Common questions

How fresh are new fleet registrations in Prospectr?
Prospectr reads FMCSA registrations from the last 90 days with 3 or more power units, refreshed every 12 hours.
Is a new USDOT number always a new company?
Not always. An existing business can register when it starts running its own trucks, which is just as good a reason to call.
